Winter Sports in Aspen
From world-class downhill skiing and snowboarding to serene snowshoeing tours with a view, Aspen has a winter sport for everyone to enjoy.
Skiing
Aspen’s four mountains are legendary, and they each have something unique to offer. Buttermilk mountain is ideal for beginners or kids, and Snowmass has the largest amount of terrain to explore—including groomers, glades, and the beautiful steep Hanging Valley. Enjoy easy access right from downtown Aspen to ski Ajax, and if you like to ride steep and deep, hiking the bowl at Aspen Highlands is a must-do. It’s about a 45-minute hike past the last chairlift to some of the steepest runs in Colorado. And make sure to take in the view before you drop in, as the famous Maroon Bells and Pyramid Peak are on the horizon.
Snowmobile Tours
If you want to give your legs a break from skiing or if you’re craving a different kind of thrill, taking a snowmobile tour is a great way to explore miles of wilderness. You can venture through the scenic White River National Forest with T-Lazy-7 snowmobile tours, zipping past snowy aspen groves and dramatic peaks. This Premier Lunch Tour ends with a gorgeous view of Pyramid Peak and a freshly-cooked burger. There is no experience necessary; you must be at least 18 years old and have a valid driver's license. Or if you want to ride to the base of North America’s most photographed peaks, check out the Maroon Bells Scenic Tour.
Snowshoe Tours
Want a great cardio workout, or a way to soak in the natural world at a slower pace? A snowshoe tour is a perfect option. Ascend the gondola on Aspen mountain to reach Richmond Ridge, a gently-hilled ridgeline with panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. Your snowshoe guide will take you on this 2.5-mile adventure, answering questions about the natural world around you on the way. If you’d rather walk along a babbling creek among the tranquility of fir forests, you can sign up for a snowshoe tour on Snowmass mountain. You must purchase tickets in advance, either online or at the lift ticket office. Your ticket includes snowshoes, the gondola up, and snowshoeing instructions from your guide.
Local Ice Skating
Ice skating at the Snowmass Base Village is a great way to play and socialize with family and friends. The rink is complete with free skate rentals on site, and cozy fireplaces dot the perimeter. When you’re done skating, the Limelight Hotel Snowmass is just steps away for an après bite to eat and a delicious cocktail. The ice rink is free and open daily from 1pm to 9pm during the ski season, winter conditions permitting. Find directions to the rink here. If you want to stick around downtown Aspen, there’s Silver Circle Ice Rink right across the street from Rubey Park Transit Center. CP Burger is right next door, too, so warm up with burgers and fries or delicious hot cocoa mid-skate.
